I have always liked Shrek because it begins by doing something wonderfully rude to the fairy-tale tradition. It opens a storybook, lets me expect elegance, romance, castles, and polished destiny, then immediately tears through that expectation with swamp humor, sarcasm, and a green ogre who wants nothing more than to be left alone. That first tonal shift still feels fresh because the film does not simply mock fairy tales from the outside. It understands their rules well enough to twist them with purpose.
