I have always found Grinch stories more interesting than a simple Christmas comedy about a grumpy creature who dislikes celebration. The best version of the character is not only annoyed by songs, gifts, decorations, and cheerful neighbors. He is wounded by them. That is why the story works for me. The Grinch does not merely reject Christmas because it is loud. He rejects it because it reminds him of belonging he does not feel he has.
